Leire Orue-Echevarria Arrieta - Policy Officer - DG CONNECT European Commission
SESSION 1: Digitalization and smart systems in industry
10:35 - 10:50 LECTURE: AFM CLUSTER/STECH initiatives in the field of AI as applied to advanced manufacturing
10:55 - 11:30 DISCUSSION PANEL: Application of AI to the manufacturing industry
Participants:
Moderates:
11:30 - 11:55 Coffee Break & Networking
11:55 - 12:10 Success story: Digital Twin of a handling robot and usage of a AI-based controller software to compensate environmental changes in stretch blow molding machines
Jens Lerche - Senior Application Engineer - MathWorks
Krones AG, headquartered in Germany, specializes in producing complete production lines for the process, filling, and packaging industry, including handling robots and stretch blow molding machines for PET bottles. The challenge was creating lighter, recycled PET bottles, as minor raw material and environmental changes significantly impacted product quality. Krones developed Contiloop AI, an AI-controlled blow molder, using reinforcement learning to adjust to various inputs and outputs. This innovative solution, combining new hardware and AI software, adapts to changes in materials and conditions, reducing manual adjustments and ensuring consistent bottle quality by monitoring light transmission during production. Contiloop AI efficiently handles rPET, supports lightweight bottle production, and is retrainable for new materials or designs via the Krones IIoT platform.
12:15 - 12:30 Success story: AI for value chain planning, sequencing and synchronisation in the automotive industry
Borja Iglesias - Managing Director and partner - Kaizen Institute
Jorge García - Production Systems Manager - Maier
Maier success story:
The overall planning of the value chain still features many manual processes, which leads to labour expenditure and decision-making without an overall view of the value chain, and consequently unoptimised resources, high intermediate stocks and low quality of service. Facing this challenge, Maier is looking for a smart factory, by generating automatic line planning and sequencing algorithms, connecting real orders with production constraints, optimising the sequence that maximises efficiency, and synchronising the value chain in real time using pull algorithms and electronic kanbans. Thus, we see a significant reduction in the value chain’s lead, the lead time and service levels are guaranteed, and finally, the efficiency of the equipment is guaranteed.
12:35 - 12:50 Success story: Beyond the data: Cometel and Digitalentu towards Innovation and Scalability
Álvaro José Zevallos - Founding partner - Digitalentu
Sandra Montes - Managing director - Cometel
Explore Cometel's transformation with Digitalentu, from data governance to improve internal efficiency, to the creation of advanced services and digital business models to ensure growth and scalability. In the digital age, where data flow with unprecedented abundance, the real challenge lies not in accumulating data, but in harnessing them strategically. Cometel S.A., a family company and a world leader in the execution of complete projects for the transport, treatment and distribution of industrial waste, was at a critical point in its evolution. Surrounded by data generated by various IT and OT technologies, the key question they faced was: "How can we turn them into our greatest asset for innovation and scalability?"
SESSION 2: Emerging digital technologies in the Industry
Iñaki Suárez - Head of Technology - BAIC (Basque Artificial Intelligence Center)

15:50 - 16:05 Success story: The importance of cybersecurity in international expansion processes
Asier Riaño - Director of Customer Service and Systems - GHI Hornos Industriales
Mikel Villar - Cybersecurity Business Unit Manager - Irontec
As part of its international expansion process, GHI develops innovative products in the field of Industry 4.0, applying Machine Learning and AI techniques. This product has been exceptionally well received in the international market, but faces the problem of responding to the cybersecurity requirements of potential customers who are concerned about the lifecycle of their data.
After an in-depth analysis and with the help of IRONTEC, the need was determined to carry out a regulatory adaptation of international certification in ISO 27001 which encompasses, on the one hand, the part of procedures in matters of information security, and on the other hand, the effective alignment of the standard with the implemented cybersecurity measures.
The results of this union translate into greater product visibility in cybersecurity-conscious markets, extra support in the commercial task, reduced entry time into new international markets, and a response to all the protection, confidentiality and traceability needs that the client required, among others.
