    Beñat Saratxaga - Behark Arquitectura (Bilbao)

    Their work with wood has been recognised with various awards, such a COAVN award, two Egurtek awards and an AITIM award. They define their work as architecture that starts from observation, is needs-based and seeks to propose only what is necessary. They advocate quiet architecture, not proud but humble, emphasising sustainable urban regeneration works and promoting citizen participation in designing public space for their enjoyment.

    Liza Heilmeyer - Birk Heilmeyer und Frenzel

    A German architect who attaches great importance to wood construction, for example in the Kita im Park kindergarten in Stuttgart. It is designed as a structural wood building with a high degree of prefabrication. The lighter weight of wood construction allows the building to be erected on top of the air-raid shelter below. The exterior walls enjoy all the advantages of a wood frame construction with ventilated façade cladding.

    Philippe Madec - Atelier Philippe Madec (Paris)

    Madec is especially sensitive when it comes to working with wood. The aim of his work is to achieve an architecture that is more respectful of natural resources, that transforms the existing before building something new, that values renewable materials and local know-how, that favours robust technical solutions and proposes a balance between tradition and modernity. In 2018, he set out these intentions in the “Manifesto for a happy and creative frugality”.

    Jette Hopp - Snøhetta

    Jette Cathrin Hopp nació en 1971. Es arquitecta y trabaja para Snøhetta desde 2005, actualmente como directora y parte del grupo directivo y es responsable de adquisiciones y nuevos proyectos. El conocido estudio noruego Snøhetta trabaja la arquitectura de manera multidisciplinar. La madera es protagonista en muchos de sus proyectos, como Čoarvemátta, Skimuseet, House Dokka... o Powerhouse Telemark, en la ciudad de Prossnun, revestido con balaustres de madera que proporcionan sombra natural en la fachada más expuesta al sol, al oeste, noroeste y noreste. Se trata de un edificio único por su eficiencia, ya que generará más energía de la que utiliza. Powerhouse Telemark ha sido diseñado con forma de diamante para aprovechar la energía solar gracias a los paneles fotovoltaicos que se instalarán en su tejado, y también dispondrá de bombas de calor que cubrirán las necesidades de calefacción.

  • 15:30 - 16:15   Lecture: Refurbishment and extension of the music school in Usurbil

    Maialen Sagarna - OS3 Arquitectura (Usurbil)

    In the project to refurbish the Zumarte Music School in Usurbil, Gipuzkoa, wood has taken centre stage due to its warmth, its sustainable nature and its lightness when it comes to propping up the refurbishment of the building. The 0S3 Arquitectura studio decided to use laminated and cross-laminated wood solutions to create new floor slabs and the roof, and used larch slatted frames and panels to design the exterior façades. Even the lift has been built with CLT wood.

    Manuel Sánchez-Villanueva - Estudio HAZ Arquitectura

    Manuel Sánchez-Villanueva, partner of Carol Beuter at the HAZ Arquitectura studio, defines the multifunctional Porta Trinitat complex in Barcelona as “a wood building where people feel at home.” In it, this material is the main feature of both the structure and the design, playing with the directions of thousands of slats to create changing textures depending on where the eye looks. She defines wood in this work as a warm material in a hostile urban environment.

  • 09:30 - 10:15   Lecture: MODULUS MATRIX - 85 VPO CORNELLA (Egurtek 2022 Award)

    José Toral - Peris+Toral Arquitectes

    Marta Peris and José Manuel Toral won the Egurtek 2022 Building Award for the Social Housing in Cornellà de Llobregat, Barcelona. The jury considered the exceptional coherence in their use of wood in its various situations within the project, from the configuration of the structure to its presence in various elements of the project, all with extreme rigour and attention to the architectural composition.

    Mikko Liski - AFKS Architects

    Wood is the axis around which the work of these Finnish architects revolves. Their great concern is how the materials are used, which can vary from obvious to unexpected, but what is important is the feeling they create: they must be warm, physical, present and you have to be able to touch them. The dignified ageing of the materials is also of great importance. This is what happens with his meticulous work with wood, such as the Finnish-Russian School in Helsinki.

    Andreas Etzelstorfer - Backraum Architektur

    Backraum Architektur is a studio headed by Andreas Etzelstorfer, which runs its projects around the conscious use of materials, which is a determining factor in its approach to architecture, as well as ecology and sustainability. That is why wood plays a leading role in most of their projects, such as Badehütte I and II, Casa M and Hintaus.

    David Chipperfield - David Chipperfield Architects

    Despite being the last Pritzker Prize winner, David Chipperfield has had an international reputation for many years. The focus of his architectural practice is his concern for the social and environmental sustainability of the built environment and its role in the collective quality of life. His major works include rebuilding the Neues Museum in Berlin, the Amorepacific headquarters in Seoul and The Bryant in New York. He has received more than 100 awards for design excellence.
